2002 New Manga Sampler

Publisher: TOKYOPOP

So you are at your local importer (or in some cases, comic shop) and you see a rack of New Manga. Your eyes widen as you scan the rack. 'What should I get?' 'What if I don't like it?' 'Am I going to waste my money?' Then you see it - the 2002 New Manga Sampler.

In gamer's terms, this is essentially a Manga 'demo disk'. Instead of having to choose a book without knowing anything about it, the sampler allows you to read a chapter from one of 15 different books to test the waters. This is also a great way to introduce new comers to the subtle nuances of Manga. Included in the book are chapters from:

  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Chobits
  • The Skull Man
  • GTO
  • Real Bout High School
  • Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
  • Love Hina
  • Initial D
  • Dragon Knights
  • Marmalade Boy
  • Kare Kano
  • Planet Ladder
  • Mars
  • Kodocha: Sana's Stage
  • Paradise Kiss

This was my first real plunge into Manga. I had seen the books at stores, but had never read them - so this was definitely a new experience for me. After I got used to the particular reading method that the books requires (something else that was completely new to me), the book exposed me to many of the different styles. Each of the stories was totally different from the other and allowed me get a good feeling of just what Manga was all about. Personally, I learned that I am not a big fan of Manga, but I still found it an interesting read. Besides - I had hours of fun just leaving the book lying around only to watch the look on people's faces as they tried to read the book backwards.
