The Vibrators: Greatest Punk Hits

Publisher: O-RAMA

The Vibrators: Greatest Punk Hits is an MVD Audio compilation featuring an assortment of album tracks released by the UK group The Vibrators. This London-based band formed in 1976 and were active into the 80's underground. Once a pub-rock act, The Vibrators got their break at legendary UK venue 100 Club just as England's new wave trend was taking off, serving as back-up band for jazz guitarist Chris Spedding. A record deal followed shortly after, and the rest is history.

The Vibrators: Greatest Punk Hits has 12 tracks off the 1991 Greenhouse Studio Sessions, plus five more off albums released in the 90's and 2000's. Their more commercial material, including "Baby, Baby" and "Automatic Lover" which charted in the UK, are part of the Greenhouse Studio Session recordings, and are NOT the original album versions -- a minor letdown for rock purists; but on the bright side, these takes are louder and clearer as opposed to the echoed side of the originals. As a fan of this kind of music, I would go ahead and buy this just to have extra newer recorded versions of their earlier stuff, and for "samples" of their recordings made in the last 20 years, at least for the sake of not having to buy the albums.

If you are strictly a Vibrators' fan, again, this compilation would benefit the collector in you to have the Greenhouse recordings, along with the originals you would probably have in your possession. If you personally know a fan of college rock, get it for a stocking stuffer this holiday season.
