The Superbees: Top of the Rocks

At just a bit over 18 minutes total, The Superbees: Top of the Rocks feels a bit small on running time than a full album, but it's also priced accordingly. So for a bit of history, The Superbees were actually formed way back in 1992. According to their MySpace site, they actually broke up in the fall of 2002, "but have been seen playing around town for cold beer and hot burritos." So now, they're back officially with the release of this new EP album Top of the Rocks. They also have the original band line-up back as well, with Dave James on vocals and guitar, Scott Carlson on guitar and vocals, Dat Ngo on bass and vocals, and Johnny Sleeper on the drums.

The Superbees sound like they'd be much more at home in the hair metal era when rock and roll was a lot more fun and less depressing than it is today. Their sound just feels like the music of the late 80's, both vocally and instrumentally. None of the songs are particularly deep, but instead they're just light and fun. There really isn't much of a difference in the feel of any of the songs. They're all about the same pace and length. Musically, I'd have to compare them most to The Rolling Stones, which makes sense as the Stones are one of their influences.

Since it's only 6 songs total, I'll just tell you a bit about each one. First, we start with "Silver Jet." Honestly, I'm really not sure what it's truly about, but it is a lot of fun and upbeat. Personally, I found it to be a good song to add to a workout play list as it just keeps you moving along. "Bad News" is second. Of course, this song is about a woman, I mean who is more bad news that us women? Let's face it, we can be real trouble when we want to! Next up is "Greyhound Tooth." It is a bit slower with a slightly more gritty feeling. Fourth is "Sin & Glitters," which is faster than the others and it's also a bit heavier feeling. Fifth up is "The Lonely Kind," which is by far the slowest song on the album. That doesn't mean it is slow, but instead just a bit more mellow sounding. To finish off Top of the Rocks we have "S.O.S. (Too Bad)." It has a very similar feel to "Silver Jet," peppy and upbeat and just plain fun.

While it is short, Top of the Rocks marks a return to the music world for a band that's been around a while. The Superbees are pure fun. I'd love to catch them live sometime because I bet that it's a really exciting show. If you're looking for pure rock and roll, check out The Superbees with their new album Top of the Rocks today!
